The Local Heritage List – VOTE NOW!
The Local Heritage List project aims to seek out County Durham’s treasures. Do you know of some iconic heritage in our local area which you would like to protect and celebrate for future generations?
These could be anything from benches and street signs to green spaces and telephone boxes. We’re looking for iconic and much-loved buildings, unusual or old street lights or even a shipwreck.
Durham County Council has been allocated funding by The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government to protect the gems which make up County Durham’s rich and vibrant cultural history.
Pilot areas
We would really like to hear from you and welcome your nomination covering heritage assets from these initial pilot areas:
- Bishop Auckland
- Durham City
- Sacriston
- Seaham
- Sedgefield
- Shotley Bridge
- Staindrop and Raby
- Stockton & Darlington Railway including Shildon
We would love to hear about all of the fantastic heritage within the County, however we are particularly interested in the areas within our patch

What happens next
After this nomination period has closed, DCC will be working hard to add as many of your submissions to the Historic Environment Record as possible.
These will then go to an independent panel to assess whether they qualify for the Local Heritage List. You can check for new additions to the list on the Keys to the Past website.
