Archaeologists are currently excavating the ruins of an impressive medieval palace, built and occupied by the powerful ‘Prince-Bishops’ who ruled England’s northern border in the middle ages, and we want you to join in the fun!
In this FREE Virtual Archaeology Tour, you will get to:
- Take a virtual walk around the ruins with one of our archaeologists
- See archaeologists in action, and what they’re unearthing
- Take a close-up look at some of the finds
- Ask questions!
What dates are available?
We have two different dates you can choose from. People of all levels are welcome, so if you’re new to archaeology don’t be afraid to come along!
The tours will take place on these dates:
- Thu 01 April, 3pm
- Tue 06 April, 12pm
Is there an option for adults?
Yes! We’ll be hosting a few tours for adults too. You can book onto our Adult Tours here.
Will I be able to watch the tour afterwards?
Yes, we’ll share a recording of the tour afterwards with everyone who registered, which can be accessed for a limited period of time. If you can’t make the live event, don’t worry! We also offer tickets for access to the recording.
More about this site
This dig is one of a series being delivered by Dig Ventures to revitalise the history, heritage, and landscape along the River Skerne.
It’s being made possible by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Durham County Council’s Archaeology Section, and Durham Wildlife Trust.
Bishop Middleham Castle, on the outskirts of Bishop Middleham, presents a tantalising opportunity to learn more about two key areas – early medieval buildings, and how the Bishops of Durham extracted wealth from their land.
