Bishop Middleham Archaeology finds – Our latest discoveries – Join us for an after-hours snoop around the Finds Room, as we unbox some of the latest discoveries from our dig at Bishop Middleham Castle

About this Event

What has DigVentures discovered this month? Step inside our Finds Room for a close-up look at some of the most curious and unique objects and artefacts from our latest archaeological dig.

For the last six weeks, we’ve been excavating the ruins of a medieval palace at Bishop Middleham in County Durham. And now, we’re ready to reveal our favourite discoveries.

This will be the first time that we unbox these artefacts in public, and you can be sure that there’ll be surprises, mysteries, and all sorts of medieval artefacts for you to marvel at.

So, join us as we host a very special evening filled with medieval artefacts and archaeological trivia, along with our friendly community from around the world. You will get to:

  • Meet our archaeologists
  • Find out what we do with our discoveries
  • Learn about the medieval palace we’ve been digging
  • See us unboxing our favourite artefacts in the Finds Room
  • Help us identify mystery objects
  • Discover the surprising stories behind these artefacts
  • Ask questions!

More about your hosts

This event is being organised by DigVentures, and will be hosted by our team of community archaeologists, including Ben, Ginny, Stuart, and Erin.

Together, we’re on a mission to share archaeology with the world and help make your dream of becoming an archaeologist come true! You can find out how to join DigVentures on a real-life excavation here.

More about this site

This dig is one of a series being delivered by Dig Ventures to revitalise the history, heritage, and landscape along the River Skerne.

It’s being made possible by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Durham County Council’s Archaeology Section, and Durham Wildlife Trust.

Bishop Middleham Castle, on the outskirts of Bishop Middleham, presents a tantalising opportunity to learn more about two key areas – early medieval buildings, and how the Bishops of Durham extracted wealth from their land.

The recording will be available to watch for 7 days (Expires 5th May 2021)

The importance of Bees

Bees are disappearing globally at an alarming rate due to pesticides, parasites, disease and habitat loss. If these little insects that help provide so much of the food we eat were to vanish, what would we do without them?
