Have you ever wondered what it’s like to be part of our team? Well now’s your chance to find out! Last week we had a virtual chat with Janette (our Voluntary Engagement Officer) and she told us all about her experience as a volunteer.
Where did you ‘Discover’ Brightwater?
I first heard of Brightwater while doing voluntary work at Durham Wildlife, they were advertising for a VEO. At the time I wasn’t working because of ill health and had decided to have a complete change of career. I found that my growing interest in gardening was proving very therapeutic for me and, with more time than I was used to, my interest in nature and being outdoors was growing.
Dish the dirt, what’s it really like working as a VEO?
It’s honestly amazing! Brightwater has provided me with the chance to develop my interest into a viable career, providing me with the training and qualifications I will need in the future.
I’ve already attended a woodland management course, gained qualifications in the use of pesticides, begun training in the use of a chainsaw and have learned so much from colleagues and trainers in a friendly and enjoyable way.
Working with Daf and the team has really helped build my confidence and given me valuable training and experience in river work, woodland management and eradication of invasive plant species to name a few!
What’s your next move?
As for my plans for the future; I am looking forward to completing the training I have started, continuing to build my confidence and skills, and then go on to find work in woodland management.
Just for fun…
Where’s your favourite place to visit in Brightwater?
Fishburn Woods, especially over Autumn as there is an abundance of different fungi!
And your favourite historic site?
Locomotion Railway Museum in Shildon. It’s amazing to have such a historic site near my home!
Favourite animal?
Dog, my best friend is my dog Noodles (Good choice, we’re all barking mad in Brightwater!)
What do you most enjoy about the great outdoors?
Going on new walks and exploring the local ecology.
Finally, what’s your most memorable moment working as a volunteer?
Working alongside Tees River Trust in the River Skerne to improve the water quality. It’s always fun until someone falls in the river!
